During the 19th Century Europe, the Earl of Millennium plans on causing total annihilation of the human race by using his AKUMAs, weapons made of machines and raging souls. The only people that can withstand them are exorcists, which belong to the Dark Religious Organization, who uses innocence, a divine substance scattered around the world in various forms.

Dr. Tenma is a Japanese brain surgeon working in Germany. One day he is ordered to skip operation on a critically injured man in favor of a more famous patient. Disillusioned by the hospital’s politics, he decides from then on that he will do what he thinks is right.

When a human is about to die, a faint gray line that is invisible to most appears around their neck. As time passes, that ring becomes darker and darker, until it is eventually black, and that person dies. Kita Michiru, as well as others she meets, has ’Shinigami eyes’ that allows them to see these rings.

Short stories in each episode. The main protagonist, Ginko, is a mushishi who helps people, villages and anything supernatural solve their problems.

Love the art style so much. The background music is also very endearing and sets up the perfect mood for the anime. Each of the episodes will either make you cry, scared, thrilled, happy or just plain entertainment value.

There is a rumor of a message board called "Jigoku Tsushin", which can only be accessed at midnight. It is said that if a person posts his or her grudge against someone there, the Jigoku Shojo will appear and take the person to Hell.

Jigoku Shojo aka Emma Ai always advices her contacts that in exchange for her sending the target to Hell, the client’s soul will also be taken to Hell after his or her death.
